There Are Many Different Parenting Styles: Which One do You Use?

father readingAs a parent, your focus is on raising your children, not necessarily the specific methods you do in the process. Some people look to their own parents as role models for their parenting styles, while others disagree with how their parents raised them and seek to parent in a completely different way. Whichever parenting style you use, it is important to know what category you fit into.

Parenting Style #1: The Dominating Parent

This parenting method is the one that is the most associated with parenting in earlier generations. Unfortunately, this particular parenting style is based on making sure the child completely obeyed, and often used harsh punishment. The result was often maladjusted children who in turn did the same thing to their children in a vicious cycle. If you feel that you are a dominating parent, you should definitely seek parenting counseling or immediately change your ways.

Parenting Style #2: The Indulging Parent

This kind of parent thinks that by buying a child toys, the child will stay quiet and not cry. While this parenting technique can work at times, it also results in the child being very spoiled, and not being willing to share. This kind of parent also shies away from the disciplining the child – specifically, in notifying the child when the child is acting in an unacceptable manner. If you think that you adhere to this kind of parenting style, you will need to strike a balance between the indulgence and practical discipline.

Parenting Style #3: The Balanced Parent

This parenting style is the one that is considered ideal, as well as the one that many parents strive to accomplish. This kind of parent loves to buy new things for their child, but at the same time knows boundaries. When a child acts out of place, rather than hitting or screaming at the child, the parent, in a firm voice, directs the child to the time-out corner, or takes away a favorite privilege, such as television, for an hour or two.

Parenting is All About Patience

Remember, as much as you as a parent might strive to be perfect, there really is not such things as a perfect parenting method. Each child is different and responds to discipline in different ways. However, hitting should never be a form of discipline. Basically, the best parent is a loving and patient parent, one who raises a polite, independent child.

Incorporating Different Types of Parenting Styles

You have probably always thought that the best way to be a parent is to take all of your parenting energy and channel it into one type of parenting style. Perhaps you have been told that the best parents are those that choose a specific parenting style and stick with it. However, there is much to be said for parenting using a mix of types of parenting styles, and you might find that this works much better than you think that it will. Different Styles

However, when should you use different types of parenting styles? There are many times when you might want to consider using different types. First of all, perhaps you have one type of parenting style that you use when things are going well. When your children are behaving and they are doing what they are supposed to be doing. Then, you have a different types of parenting styles to use when your children are not behaving. You might be able to find that your children actually can see this switch coming, and that they are able to recognize when you will move to different types of parenting styles.

Another time when you might want to move to different types of parenting styles is when your children get older. You might be one way specifically with them when they are younger, but then as they get older you might want to be a different way.
